“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.” – Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
I have recently been reading some very interesting articles and watching inspirational videos about how to change the world. I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to change the world is by making small changes in our own life and to do so we first need to have a happy life.
After my research I have also realized that it is true that such a thing as ‘being happy’ does not exist, but what is clearly possible is living happy moments. Having small, happy moments motivates us to create more of these moments that keep us going.
Here are three things that I’m now putting into practice and that I think will help you have a happier lifestyle too.
1. Focus on what you can do
Of course there are so many things we can’t do. It is important to acknowledge them and not to ignore them. But continuously thinking of our limitations can be very frustrating and that doesn’t improve any situation.
However, if you focus on what you can do and understand what you are good at, you will feel much more powerful and positivity will always help you go the extra mile.
Scientists also say that helping others releases a large number of ‘endorphins’ or ‘happy hormones’ into our bodies which proves that doing small things for other people can make us feel better about ourselves.
2. Surround yourself with positive people
Positivism leads to more positivism. This is why spending time with positive people is so important. When people around you are optimistic and constructive, they encourage you to be positive with them and this turns into a feedback loop of sorts. Just like negative behavior leads to more negative behavior. Getting into the right circle is critical and the only way to achieve this is by surrounding yourself with the right people.
There are a number of things you can do to boost your own positive thinking and to spread positivism around you: smile more often, be kind towards yourself and others, surprise the people you love with small details, say good things about others, always be honest, or learn a new skill.
3. Always have something to look forward to
It doesn’t’ need to be a once in a lifetime event but looking forward to small things that you like will help you to get rid of sad feelings quicker. Keeping yourself exited is important to have small moments of happiness.
We all have things that we like to do but sometimes it can be difficult to identify them. Think about hobbies, friends, family, clubs, communities or organizations that you may be interested in. Then plan your agenda or make a list of things to do so you will always have small things to look forward to in the short run.
