How to Connect a Nintendo Wii to the Internet
The Nintendo Wii console can be connected to the Internet with a few basic set-up steps. Note that the Wii Mini currently doesn’t have wireless Internet connectivity, so these steps only apply to the standard Wii console. To connect this game system successfully, you’ll already need a wireless network set up in your home or office.
<strong>Step One: Navigate to the Wii Settings</strong>
Power on the Wii console and check that your wireless router is turned on as well. Press the “A” button on the console’s remote to bring up the main menu. Navigate to and select the “Wii” button in the lower left corner of the screen. Select “Wii Settings,” followed by the “Wii System Settings” menu.
<strong>Step Two: Select the Right Connection Settings</strong>
Scroll to the second page of the system settings menu and select “Internet.” Select “Connection Settings,” followed by “Connection 1: None.” Press the “Wireless Connection button,” and then select “Search for an Access Point.”
<strong>Step Three: Connect the Wii to Your Wireless Access Point</strong>
The Wii screen should come up with all available wireless networks. Select yours and enter your access key if you have one set up. Check the top left corner of the screen to make sure the security type is the same as the one for your wireless router. If you don’t know your router’s security key, you’ll need to check the device’s documentation for it. You can also visit the Wii help pages for default router keys listed by each different manufacturer.
Once you’ve entered your security key and clicked “Save Settings,” the Wii console will run a connection test that should take only a couple of minutes. When you get the message that the connection was successful, you don’t need to pay attention to the “Wii Support Code” that will appear on the screen. If your connection doesn’t work the first time and you get an “Error Code 51330,” this means your router security settings don’t match up with the Wii’s detected information about your wireless router. Reentering this information normally solves this common problem with connecting your Wii console to the Internet.
